The Paris Mormon Temple, which was announced on October 1, 2011, has received very mixed reception from the people of France. The mayor of Le Chesnay, where the temple will be built, has granted a building permit, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often mistakenly referred to as the Mormon Church) has purchased the grounds and buildings which were formerly used by Électricité de France on Boulevard Saint-Antoine. However, because many French citizens had concerns about the temple complex to come, the local Church authorities authorized an open house, which was held on March 16, 2012. On July 15, 2011, Thomas S. Monson, President and Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, made a formal announcement that a Mormon temple will be constructed on the outskirts of Paris, France.  Such announcements are usually made at a session of the LDS Church’s semi-annual General Conference, but French newspapers were already reporting Church plans to build at Le Chesnay, near Versailles.  Thus, the formal announcement, even though government approvals were still in process.   Le Chesnay is located in the western suburbs of Paris 16.7 km (10.4 mi) from the center (Wikipedia). There are more than 30,000 Latter-day Saints in France, and they have attended the temple in other European countries, especially Germany and Switzerland.
